Covering over 230 acres of woodland and water, Newmillerdam Country Park is one of Wakefield’s most scenic and historic outdoor spaces.

Originally known as Thurstonhaugh, the area became known as “New Mylle on Dam” around 1285, when a new corn mill was built upstream near the present-day Boathouse. The dam once powered the mill’s water wheel, and although the current mill building on the A61 dates from the 1820s, the area’s history stretches back centuries.

Today, Newmillerdam offers:

  • A 1.5-mile surfaced lakeside path

  • Way-marked woodland trails

  • Routes for walkers, joggers and cyclists

  • Bridleways for horse riders

  • Wildlife and peaceful countryside views

Whether you’re enjoying a gentle lakeside stroll, an early morning run or a family day out, Newmillerdam Country Park is a wonderful place to explore during your stay in Wakefield.

Hotel St Pierre is located just minutes away, making it the perfect base for visitors looking to enjoy the natural beauty of Newmillerdam.
