History of Sandal Castle
Just 1.5 miles from Hotel St Pierre near Newmillerdam, Sandal Castle stands as one of Wakefield’s most important historic landmarks. The castle is best known for the Battle of Wakefield (1460) during the Wars of the Roses, where Richard, Duke of York, lost his life.
During the 1640s English Civil War, Parliamentary forces attacked and besieged the castle twice. After these sieges, they dismantled much of the structure, leaving behind the impressive ruins visitors explore today. You can still see the remains of the 13th-century stone castle, along with its classic motte and bailey layout.
